This area, between the volcanic cone of Mount Vesuvio and the Sarno mountains to the north and Lattari to the south, is composed of 20 municipalities, including 16 in the province of Salerno and 4 in the province of Naples.
There are many quality and excellence production facilities, going from the processed tomato products, to the production of preserved food, and of pasta (Gragnano is known as the town of Pasta), to DOC wine (Lettere and Gragnano), and the Nocera onion (DOP), to oil (DOP), and a special kind of apple called "melannurca" (IGP). The San Marzano tomatoes is of course the most familiar product to consumers, also known as the "red gold" which has received the Protected Designation of Origin - DOP.
