The Paper District of Capannori covers an area of 750 sq. kilometers divided into 12 municipalities of the Province of Lucca and Pistoia. There are 130 businesses in the district with 6,500 employees. The related activities involve about 11,300 workers. Along with sector companies that are highly specialized, there are manufacturing and services activities related to the supply chain.

30% of companies in the District make corrugated cardboard, tissue, and cardboard for food and industrial uses; 70% of the companies consists of papermaking firms.

The District represents 80% of the national production of tissue paper and 17% at European level; as for corrugated cardboard, the companies in the cluster of Capannori make 40% of the national total and 5% at European level.

Staring from 2006 the district tested the EMAS approach (Reg. CE 1221/2009) and obtained the EMAS Italian Recognition by national competent body.
